Madison Christian Community

Kids in the Garden

Welcome!
We invite you to join us as we celebrate another summer of gardening, cooking, learning, and playing in the garden at Madison Christian Community (MCC). Each summer children from Lussier Community Center join with staff and volunteers from MCC for eight weeks of "Garden Camp." Volunteers and staff from MCC tend and nurture the garden space throughout the year to provide produce for the Lussier Community Center Food Pantry.

Weekly Activities
We gather on Tuesday and Thursday mornings for eight weeks during the summer. Each week a new set of lessons and activities are offered that teach about the interconnectedness of the garden to all of life, respect for living things and each other, and healthy eating. Children rotate between outside garden work and inside cooking activities with special presentations from those skilled in gardening, botany, composting, beekeeping, chicken care, and weather to name but a few.

Recipes from the Garden
Each year the children learn how to make healthy snacks using produce from the garden. In our kitchen, everyone is a chef! At the closing of camp each day we share this wonderful healthy creation made by the children.

May 2017 Update

The soil is warming, and soon it’ll be time to plant and get the garden going… And it’s time to get organized for the Kids in the Garden program for this summer. Children ranging from ages 5-10 will be coming to the garden on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from about 10-11:00am starting June 20 through August 10. Volunteers are asked to be at the garden by 9:30/45am to get ready for the children. The children will be divided into two groups and alternate between learning outside or inside preparing food for snack. Outside in the garden the children will be divided into smaller groups to work closely with volunteers.

Becky Hustad, the coordinator of the program, has already met with the Lussier staff and some members of the Green Team. Volunteers will guide students in their garden experience - observing, caring for the garden and harvesting.

Volunteers can sign up for all days or just what fits their schedules. A sign-up sheet is in the Shalom room, and you’ll be able to sign up for specific days on our online volunteer system soon. If you have questions, see Susan Gruber or Joyce Anderson. So if you enjoy being outdoors (a couple helpers still needed for indoors also esp. Tuesdays) and you enjoy children, sign up and join us in the garden this summer for the Kids in the Garden program.

MCC Volunteers
Volunteers are at the heart of the Madison Christian Community garden ministry.
All of our volunteers submit a background check, participate in our Parish Child Protection program, and are committed to providing a safe and friendly environment for all of the children who come to the garden. We have an annual meeting with staff from the Lussier Community Center to ensure compliance with their licensing policy and to further build our relationship with this extended part of our community.

If you are interested in offering your time with our garden ministry program, please contact Madison Christian Community.
